It really isn’t too late to start improving your health. It doesn’t have to be hard either. Here are some easy steps to get you started on your journey to better health.
Stop eating processed foods. Eat organic, locally grown. Growing your own food gives you control of how it’s grown. You get exercise tending to a garden. There is a sense of accomplishment when you harvest what you have grown.
Stop eating GMO’s. Genetically altering crops so they are insect resistant does not make the crops healthy for you to eat either.
Stop drinking sugary drinks. These include soda, juice, and energy drinks. Start cutting back on the sugar you add to tea and coffee. This also includes kombucha. Check the labels. Many are high in sugar.
Stop eating “white food”. What do I mean? White flour, white salt and white sugar. These are highly processed and striped of nutritional value. You are just filling up on junk when you consume these. For some eating gluten free may be the way to go to drastically improve chronic health situations. I am not saying no salt. You can have real salt – pink himalayan, celtic or sea salt. Keep two or three around and rotate. Different salts contain different minerals that are good for us. If you need to have something sweet use healthy, natural sweeteners. I use honey and organic maple syrup. But very sparingly.
Drink filtered water. Your water should be stored in stainless steel or glass. Forget the plastic bottles. The plastic bottles can soften and leach nasty chemicals into your water. My daughter carried her water in glass to school in Lifefactory bottles. She dropped them and they did not break.
Move every day. Park a few spaces farther away. Walk an extra aisle or two when shopping. If you like to shop pick aisles that don’t interest you so you won’t be tempted to buy more items. Do you have to walk to a community mailbox to pick up your mail? Walk a couple of extra blocks when you pick it up. Breaking a sweat is good for you. We release toxins when we sweat. We need to get the toxins out. Holding onto them will just keep us feeling poorly and could make us feel worse.
Work on stress management. Yoga, breathing exercises, stretching can help. I always find a walk in nature to be calming. Journaling can be another great way to release stress.
Clean up your home. Stop using chemical cleaners. Get rid of chemical “fragrances”. This means scented candles, laundry products, paper products, all soaps, make-up and personal products. Start reading labels, the one where the ingredients are listed. It may say “fragrance free” on the front but when you read the back you may see fragrance listed.
Get some good sleep. We heal when we sleep. We all have different sleep requirements, learn what your’s is. Most of us do well on seven to nine hours. I tend to need closer to the nine-hour mark. Establish a regular sleep routine. Go bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every day. Move the tv and laptop out of the bedroom.
Take a break from electronics on a regular basis. People actually led full lives before all our electronic gadgets.
Most of us can benefit from quality probiotics, digestive aids and multi-vitamins. When you supplement make sure you use quality products. Buying the cheap stuff will probably not be the best option. They often contain fillers that we don’t benefit from. Personally, I would rather pay more for the quality supplements now to improve and maintain my health than have to pay for medical care later. The choice is yours.
Clear the air in your home. Open the windows. Purchase and use good quality air filters. If you can only afford one put it in your bedroom.
If you must dry clean your clothes remove the plastic as soon as you get home. Hang the clothes outside to air out before putting them in your closet. If you can’t hang them outside hang them away from where you sleep. If there is an environmentally friendly dry cleaners (perc free) near you, use them.
Pick a couple of these to work into your daily routine. When you have mastered those you can add another one, and so on. Before you know it you will be feeling better and your home will be a greener place for you to live. Which ones will you do first?
